Liesl Von Trapp (Age to be played: 16)
Character Description: At age 16, Liesl is the eldest of the Von Trapp siblings. She is innocent, naïve, coy, flirtatious, headstrong and infatuated with Rolf. She is pretty but unsophisticated and tends to think everything is wonderful. She has a maternal edge to her and cares very deeply and lovingly for her younger siblings.
Acting Tips:
- Practice showing both your mature and childlike sides
- With your siblings, act like a second mom, especially to Gretl
- With Rolf, alternate between confidence and shyness
- Your relationship with Maria should evolve from resistance to friendship to seeing her as a mother figure
- In "Sixteen Going on Seventeen," express your excitement about growing up but also your uncertainty
- HOW TO YODEL!
Austrian children of wealthy families were typically taught by governesses and expected to master multiple languages, music, and proper social etiquette.
They would likely know formal dances like the Ländler (as shown when Maria dances with the Captain).
Their physical bearing would reflect their upbringing – good posture, proper walking, and formal greetings were instilled from an early age.
Overall Acting Notes:
"The Sound of Music" balances serious historical events with family warmth and musical joy.
Each character contributes to this beloved story about finding courage and staying true to your values, even in difficult times.
Remember that the emotion behind each song is as important as the notes.
Project your voice to the back of the theater.
Articulate clearly, especially at the ends of sentences.
Look at each line and "punch" key words that the audience must hear to understand what you are saying.
React and listen to others when they're speaking, even if you don't have lines.
Make sure the audience can see your face when you're speaking.
