Synopsis of "The Sound of Music"
Set in Austria in late 1930s, "The Sound of Music" follows Maria Rainer, a free-spirited young woman who is a postulant (candidate for religious order) at Nonnberg Abbey. Because she's often breaking the abbey's rules by singing and enjoying the outdoors, the Mother Abbess sends Maria to serve as governess to the seven children of Captain Georg von Trapp, a widowed naval officer who runs his household with military discipline.
Upon arrival, Maria discovers the Captain is strict and distant with his children, using whistles to summon them and forbidding music in the house as it reminds him of his late wife. Maria brings music back into the home, teaching the children to sing and helping them reconnect with their father. As Maria and the children grow closer, she and the Captain begin to fall in love, despite his engagement to the wealthy Baroness Elsa Schraeder.
The story takes place against the backdrop of the 1938 Anschluss, when Nazi Germany annexed Austria. Captain von Trapp is a proud Austrian nationalist who opposes the Nazi regime. After he and Maria marry, he receives a commission to serve in the German Navy, which he refuses. The family's friend Max Detweiler arranges for them to perform at the Salzburg Festival, which they use as cover to escape Austria after their performance. With the help of the nuns at the abbey, they flee over the mountains to Switzerland as the Nazis search for them.
